St. Luke’s Hospital with over 90,000 annual visits has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Massachusetts. The team of DAI and MBI worked with St. Luke’s Hospital on this Design/Build project to renovate and expand their existing Emergency Department (ED) and convert the patient rooms from doubles to singles. The scope of this project encompassed 94,000 square feet of addition and renovations covering five stories that was implemented in multiple phases to maintain the hospital’s operations during construction.

The design team proposed an 18,000 square foot addition connected to the existing ED to be constructed. Once completed, this would house the ED while the existing ED underwent renovation. To accomplish the phased construction, the design called for demolishing a small addition that was constructed approximately 14 years ago and building a temporary ambulatory and ambulance entrance located off the existing parking deck. To maximize efficiency, this space was carefully designed so that it could eventually be incorporated into the new ED as a dedicated Radiology Unit.
